Bodegas El Capricho consists of only 7 Hectares of vineyards in central Uruguay, owned and operated by German, Dirk Reinike, and Italian, Paul Savio. These two friends for some 30 years dreamt of having a winery and made it happen over the decades. Today with Uruguayan winemaker, Javier Alegresa, they are crafting some of the most exciting wines in the nation.
This Verdejo is apparently from the first and only planting of this Spanish variety in Uruguay, a country mostly known for making Tannat, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, etc. Verdejo is known for it's rich, silky texture, and pear-like attributes. El Capricho Verdejo certainly delivers
on both fronts, while adding in crisp acidity, and some yellow citrus notes that bend towards greens, and lively herbaciousness. The grapes are hand picked, and cold macerated for 24 hours. Therefore, the colour is deep yellow, and the wine is very aromatic. It is then aged in stainless steel to preserve its freshness. The mouthfeel is lightly creamy, yet zesty, like lemon pie, and the weight of this wine is such that it can be drunk year round at seasonally-adjusted temperatures. Pairings that leap to mind include Chliean Sea Bass, Seared Scallops, or a Smoked Turkey and Avocado on Sourdough Sandwich!
